Welcome to Ms. Fay’s French 232: Intensive Intermediate French Grammar with a Twist!

You may be wondering why you are sitting in a computer lab. Did you wind up in CS 101 by mistake? Mais non! You are going to be a part of an experimental language course using the latest computer technology and the World Wide Web to enhance your experience of French language, culture and literature.

What does this entail?

Every Thursday we will meet in Cabell 210 and conduct class as usual...Except that sometimes we will do grammar exercises on the computer instead of in the textbook...and sometimes we will surf the web and look at French and francophone sites around the world. There will also most definitely be some surprises...

What if I’ve never used a computer before, or I’ve never surfed the web?

Ne vous en faîtes pas! All of us will be learning how to deal with the equipment on some level and we will spend much time getting used to the computers every time we use them. If you are already a pro, you will be expected to help others, if you are lost, remember these words: “Je suis perdu!” and I will come help you.

What if I don’t like using the computers? Will they get in the way?

They might get in the way. That’s why we’ll have Tuesday’s classes elsewhere (12:30 French House; 2:00 Cabell 312) and if the computer lab really doesn’t work out, we’ll move to another classroom.

This is a trial course that I have been planning for a long time and I am really excited to teach it. There will certainly be ups and downs, but we will be in it together.  I hope you will feel that you are my partners in this experiment. I will rely on your feedback --your comments, concerns, problems and criticisms as we go. Emails (cfay@virginia.edu) are welcome!
