Travaux

1. Lectures:

All readings must be completed for the date assigned on the syllabus. I will provide you with exact page numbers, or in some cases, a list of poems. Readings will vary in length, but will generally not exceed 40 pages per class meeting. This means that you must start reading early and pace yourselves as you go, reading a little bit every day.

Each week I will provide you with a short study guide to help you focus your reading. I will post the weekly study guides on the class toolkit web site as well as distribute them in class. The guides will give you background information, point out stylistic details, and in some cases difficult vocabulary and/or grammar. I will also include discussion questions. You can be sure that the questions on the study guide will come up in class discussion.

2. Participation:

Regular contributions to class discussion are vital to your learning experience. Please do not hesitate to speak up in class, ask questions, try out an idea, etc. even if you are not sure of how to express your ideas correctly in French. We are all here to learn (oui, même le professeur!) and all ideas and opinions are worthy of attention. I encourage you to express yourselves as best you can, ask for help when you need it, and simply have fun playing with the language and your ideas.

Please note the French department's policy concerning unexcused absenses: any student with four (4 ) or more unexcused absenses, in a course that meets twice a week, will be dropped from the course.

If you must miss class due to illness, family emergency, participation in a varsity sport (letter from your coach required), or religious holiday, please notify me as soon as possible.

3. Préparation:

Response papers: Every Thursday you will hand in a one-page typed paper written in response to the reading for that week. Please address any word, sentence, paragraph, passage in the reading that caught your attention, that strikes you in a certain way. You may write about a passage you love; you may write about a passage you hate. You may write about something you do not quite understand. All I ask is that you write your own ideas. (In other words, no plot summaries and no syntheses of others' ideas.)

Guidelines for response papers:

*Typed, double-spaced, with ACCENTS

*Due every Thursday at the beginning of class, or you may submit it to me electronically (details on electronic submission to be announced.)

*The writing does not need to be very polished; however, please check spelling, gender, agreement and verb conjugation.

*Check spelling of important names (titles, characters, authors, etc.)

Mini-quiz: Every Tuesday, there will be a 10 minute mini-quiz on the reading for that day. The questions will address basic comprehension of the reading, vocab, etc.

4. Mémoires:

You will write two short papers (5-7 pages) on a topic which I will assign to you. Please note the due dates on the syllabus. Grades will be lowered for papers submitted after the deadlines.

5. Examen final:

The final exam will be a take-home exam, distributed on the last day of class, and due in my office no later than noon on Monday December 10.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
